Rusudan Mepisashvili

1913-2002 / art historian

Rusudan was an art historian, doctor of architecture (1971), and a meritorious Georgian artist (1982). In 1936 she graduated from the South Caucasus Industrial Institute with a degree in architecture and in 1941 began working at the Georgian Art History Institute.

Rusudan was actively involved in efforts to protect and restore cultural monuments. In the 1980s she headed the monument inspection department of the Main Directorate for History, Culture, Nature and Monument Protection. She published numerous monographs on various monuments of Georgian architecture. Worthy of special note is her work on the Gelati Monastery, which includes a detailed study of the complex.

Rusudan was also one of the founders of the Giorgi Chubinashvili Institute of Art History.
